Passport to Health

Students at a Delaware County school display their “Passport to Health” booklets.

A few years ago, nurses from the cancer programs at DCMH and Crozer developed the Passport to Health program. This program provides teachers in local elementary schools with booklets containing a series of educational worksheets that emphasize good health behaviors. In the 2007-2008 school year, the program reached more than 4,800 students in 24 Delaware County schools in third, fourth and fifth grades. The program is generously underwritten with support from AstraZeneca, Commerce Bank and the Crozer-Keystone Health System.

Smedley High School for Health Careers

Cutting a ceremonial ribbon at the opening of the Smedley High School for Health Careers are Mark Ornstein from the Chester Upland School District; Angela Thompson, principal of the Smedley High School for Health Careers; Gregory Thornton, Ph.D., superintendent of the Chester Upland School District; Joan K. Richards, president and chief executive officer of Crozer-Keystone Health System; and Gwen Smith, RN, CCRN, MSN, MBA, president of Springfield Hospital and vice president of Community Health Services for Crozer-Keystone.

Crozer-Keystone nurses participated in the fall 2008 creation of the Smedley High School for Health Careers in Chester, which is dedicated to preparing and motivating students to pursue further education toward a career in the medical sciences. In addition to classroom-based learning, students will have the opportunity to participate in internships and mentoring programs at Crozer-Keystone hospitals. Before opening the school, new teachers were hired, a new curriculum was developed, and the school was renovated with computers, laboratory materials and medical equipment to aid students in their learning.

Nursing Resource Audit

Crozer-Keystone nurses also train their colleagues. The Nursing Resource Audit found that more than 325 nurses participate in mentoring. One unique program at DCMH called “Cornerstones” provides education for RNs returning to the bedside, RNs without critical care or emergency experience and graduate nurses with a temporary practice permit. The comprehensive orientation program includes classroom education, competency-based clinical support, peer support and mentoring. Classroom activities include lectures, case presentations, hands-on simulation, audio/visuals, CD-ROM programs, discussions, observational experiences, self-learning modules and competencies.
