The incidence of diabetes is steadily increasing in the United States, and is even being referred to as an “epidemic.” Obesity is one the largest contributing factors to developing diabetes. About 80% of people with diabetes are considered obese.
Fortunately, prevention is easy and is the best defense against diabetes. By simply eating healthier foods such as fruit, vegetables, fish, lean meats, and foods low in fat and sodium, you can decrease your risk of obtaining diabetes. Exercising is also an effective way to prevent diabetes. By working out for 30 – 60 minutes for 3 or more days a week, you can also prevent diabetes. Eating healthy and exercising will help you maintain a healthy weight. For people who smoke, quitting can drastically reduce the risk of acquiring diabetes.
While there is no cure for diabetes, practicing a healthy lifestyle is the best way of defending yourself against the disease.
