What is psychotherapy?

Psychology is openly sharing your concerns, thoughts, and feelings with a professional in a group or individual setting. You may be asked to complete assignments, agreed tasks or homework assignment outside the therapy session. You will be expected to show up for sessions as scheduled and to give advance notice in any emergency case of a cancellation (the only exception is in cases of last-minute emergencies).

You are choosing to take responsibility for your life, to recognize and acknowledge your pain and humanness, and to find new strength within yourself. In some situations, a combination of medication and therapy may be the most effective way to treat symptoms.

What can I expect from my therapist?

  • Privacy and confidentiality
  • Treatment in a decent and respectful manner
  • Realistic emotional support.
  • Helps you feel at ease during the meetings
  • A neutral, noncritical, and nonjudgmental environment
  • Honesty
  • A professional relationship
  • Adherence to ethical codes to assure that therapy remains safe.

What types of services are available?

We can help you if you are dealing with the following situations:

  • Bereavement
  • Adjusting to and coping with new life circumstances (aging, loss of a job, medical illness or disability)
  • Long-standing personality problems, including the following:

-Inadequately developed sense of identity/self, passivity, nonassertiveness, timidity
-Excessive emotional sensitivity, tendency to take things personally or overreact
    -Difficulty with intimacy/commitment
    -Indecisiveness, self-doubt
-Lack of motivation or excessive feelings of inhibition
-Chronic feelings of bitterness, doubt, or negativity
    -Long-standing unresolved conflicts with others
-Psychosomatic symptoms (for example: tension headaches, fatigue and insomnia)
    -Chronic worrying, anxiety
    -Loneliness
    -Feelings of inadequacy
    -Communication problems
    -Interpersonal problems
    -Facing difficult problems
-Unfinished business (old, unresolved wounds from an earlier time in one's life).

How do I become eligible for these services?

Do you have to be diagnosed with serious mental illness to need therapy? No. Therapy can be used for both serious mental illness and life problems that cause distress. Your therapist can help evaluate your needs and develop a therapy plan

How do I find a therapist?

Talk to your case manager. If you are not sure who that is, a secretary can direct you appropriately.

How long will I be eligible for services?

In most circumstances, you can expect to attend weekly therapy sessions as deemed clinically appropriate by your doctor and therapist.  Often, that is until the issue that brought you into treatment has been resolved.
