First on the East Coast
When the Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center opened in November 1973, it was the first burn treatment center on the East Coast between Boston, Massachusetts and Richmond, Virginia. Today it still is the only burn facility in suburban Philadelphia that provides all the services needed to meet all the needs of burn patients and their families within a single unit - from emergency treatment to intensive care to rehabilitation to follow-up and outpatient care.

A Pioneer
The center was one of the first to use cultured cell transplantation, or cloning, of a patient's skin. Our team continues to use state-of-the-art surgical techniques, medications, therapies, wound care and skin replacement products. The team also helped design the shower trolley used in the daily care and gentle cleansing of burn wounds.
We have earned an international reputation for excellence in holistic burn care, treating more than 7,300 new patients since 1973, an average of 350 patients annually. We also treat non-burn injuries, such as "road rash," and medication reactions and other skin diseases that result in conditions similar to those experienced by burn patients.
