Fluoroscopy uses X-rays along with a contrast agent to view various organs in the body. Common fluoroscopy procedures performed include barium enema, upper GI series and small bowel series.
The contrast agent may be placed in the body in various different ways based on the area your doctor has asked us to look at. The patient is placed in front of or on an X-ray table, X-ray contrast is given to the patient and the radiologist uses a fluoroscope (an X-ray machine that takes pictures like a video camera). The patient is asked to move into different positions for different pictures.
